COMMISSION launched in September of 2018 in New York. As first-generation immigrants in the US, Jin Kay, Huy Luong and Dylan Cao’s fond memories of their mothers, particularly their working wardrobes in the 90s in Asia, form the core identity of the brand.
Nostalgic yet modern, practical and pure. Looking beyond the typical Asian tropes, COMMISSION sets out to redefine the visual language of East Asian culture in the fashion industry. “ We want to prove that there’s more nuance in Asian culture than typical motifs and generalizations often portrayed through a Western lens. COMMISSION is a medium to shift this discussion to reflect a more modern vision.” says the trio.
The trio divides their strengths strategically: Huy works on the art direction and visual identity, including photographing the lookbooks, Jin works on clothing design and Dylan works on accessories, production and communication.
